We just released a very practical guide on peer work, based on the first-hand experiences of peer workers in South Africa.

Together with activists and peer- and outreach workers in South Africa, Mainline worked on a practical guide about involving peers in harm reduction work.

The key recommendations:

1. Pay attention to recruitment.
2. Offer diverse work engagement levels.
3. Promote a harm reduction approach to drug use among staff.
4. Foster a supportive work environment.
5. Provide and foster mental health care.
6. Build and sustain boundaries.
7. Invest in team care by promoting diversity and respect.
8. Promote meaningful involvement of staff who uses drugs at all levels, not only on service delivery.
