Mainline at AIDS2018

Amsterdam hosted the International AIDS conference between 23 July and 27 July. The Mainline staff jumped on their bikes and in the Mainline van to be there. Our highlight of the week: the harm reduction networking zone, which we coordinated together with the Rainbow Group

The zone provided a vibrant space for people who use drugs or who have a (professional) interest in drugs, harm reduction services and drug policy. We organised a small needle and syringe exchange and provided information about (safer) drug use in the Netherlands.

A lot of topics that were not addressed in the formal conference found a place in our space in the so-called ‘Global Village’. The harm reduction zone was co-sponsored by INPUD, IDPC, Open Society Foundation, Harm Reduction International and AFEW International.

To provide people with a relaxed place away from the conference buzz, we parked our Mainline outreach van right in front of the conference centre. Delegations from various countries stopped by in order to learn more about harm reduction and the drug policy in the Netherlands. Mainline looks back on a fruitful week of meeting old and new friends from the field, exchanging the latest developments and drug trends and strategising to keep harm reduction on the political agenda.

Thanks to all the volunteers and everyone else who helped make the harm reduction networking zone a great success!
